Council Vice Chairman Richard E. Salomon announced at the February 2008 meeting of the Board of Directors that the Campaign for the Council had successfully surpassed its goal of $120 million. This fundraising effort, launched in September 2005, set out with three ambitious objectives: to ensure the quality, depth, and range of the Studies Program; to increase the Council’s impact via its award-winning website, CFR.org, as well as its other publications, workshops, and outreach initiatives; and to expand programming and member services in the Council’s new Washington building.
Chairman Emeritus Peter G. Peterson and Salomon cochaired the Campaign. An initial goal of $85 million was determined at the outset and was surpassed by the time of the Council’s 85th Anniversary Gala in October 2006. The Board of Directors then approved raising the goal to $100 million to meet the Council’s expanding funding needs and the momentum based on the generosity of members. By June of 2007, the $100 million milestone had been passed, and the decision was made to increase the goal to $120 million.
The Campaign closed in March of 2008 with a final tally of $123,664,124 in cash and pledges from over 500 donors.

“I have been humbled by the generosity of so many of our dedicated members,” said Peterson. “We received twenty-nine gifts of $1 million or more. The success of this effort has helped ensure the Council’s financial position for the long term.”
“One consistent theme I heard from many of our donors was recognition of the importance and quality of the Council’s programs under the leadership of Richard Haass,” said Salomon. “What also emerged was widespread appreciation for Pete Peterson’s twenty-two years of stewardship of the Council. There is no doubt in my mind that a large part of the success of this campaign is due to the remarkable regard so many have for Pete.”

The David Rockefeller Studies Program is just one of the many beneficiaries of the Campaign. Endowment for the Studies Program generally—as well as specific endowment gifts made to establish a new chair for energy and the environment as well as a fellowship for women and foreign policy—will provide ongoing revenue for the broad range of research activities undertaken within the Council. Several donors also made generous operating grants to support work in specific areas of research.
The Council’s Outreach initiatives and Meetings Program also benefited from the Campaign. A new International Affairs Fellowship in India was made possible by a Campaign gift, as was ongoing long-term support for the Stephen M. Kellen Term Member Program. Symposia on international economics and the future of the U.S. military are now fully endowed and will become regular features of the annual meetings program.
