President, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation
Ms. Spero is president of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, which supports national grantmaking programs in the performing arts, environmental preservation, medical research, and prevention of child abuse. Ms. Spero also serves as president of several operating foundations created by Doris Duke and based at her residences, including Duke Farms Foundation and the Foundation for Islamic Art. From 1993 to 1997, Ms. Spero served as undersecretary of state for economic, business and agricultural affairs. During the Carter administration, she served as U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Economic & Social Council. From 1981 to 1993, Ms. Spero was an executive with American Express Company, where her last position was executive vice president, corporate affairs and communications. Earlier, she was an assistant professor at Columbia University, and she is the author of several books on international economics and banking. She serves as a trustee of Columbia University and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, and is a director of IBM Corp. and First Data Corporation. She is based in New York, NY.
